VOUCHER CHOICE PROGRAM (SECTION 8) The Monroe Housing Authority has two rental assistance programs that were created under Section 8 of the 1974 federal Housing and Community Development Act. Under these programs, the MHA provides subsidies to local landlords on behalf of low-income families and individuals living in privately owned housing in the City of Monroe. The Housing Choice Voucher Program is the most popular with tenants because they can utilize them to find their own residence and live in the neighborhood of their choice. Many take advantage of the programs' portability to transfer to other parts of the country. This program assists eligible families in finding safe, decent, and affordable housing. The housing authority makes housing payments directly to the landlords. The housing authority is responsible for collecting income verifications and calculating the tenant's portion of the subsidy. The family may pay 30% to 40% of their household income for rent. This program is based on Federal Income Guidelines. Self-Sufficiency Program:The Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS) is designed to help Section 8 residents become independent and self-supporting. Through partnerships with local agencies the program assists participants in reaching their goals including obtaining a GED, college degree or vocational and technical training. Participants have access to child care assistance, transportation, courses in money management, and career counseling Frequently Asked Questions Are you accepting Section 8 applications? Applications are only taken at certain times. A notice will run in the local newspaper. Some individuals may qualify for special assistance. Inquire in person any time Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Proper verification is required. Where do I apply? Apply in person at 210 Harrison Street, Monroe, LA 71201, (318) 388-1500 How will I know if my application has been approved? You will receive a letter of eligibility or ineligibility within ten working days after you apply. Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to qualify? Yes, and No. You must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Non-citizen that has eligible immigration status. What is the income limit for this program? Income limits are based on Federal guidelines. Do you offer emergency housing? No. Everyone must go on the waiting list. What is the age limit of eligibility? You must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Do you have to have children to apply?
